A real treat to experience a four hour, eighteen mile train ride during the season of color up a beautiful canyon...this stretch of track follows the Verde River and was constructed to move ore from the copper mine in Jerome in 1910 and commenced hauling tourists in 1990...the track is still used for transporting cement from a local plant...the two vintage diesel locomotives were originally built for the Alaska Railroad in 1953...I believe I heard one of the guides say the passenger cars were built in the 40's...there are canopy covered open viewing cars between each passenger car with a guide sharing the history of the area and interesting geological features..
