A very scenic drive that is close to the Phoenix area is the Apache Trail...This road takes you past the Superstition Mountains, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake and ends at Roosevelt Lake...less than half of the road is paved...Fish Creek Hill is a two mile section of the trail that is a narrow, rough, dirt road filled with blind curves and incredible views...this is a time I wish I was a passenger so I could just hop out along the way with my camera and not have to drive with an eye on the road and an eye on the scenery...Construcction of the Apache Trail began in 1903 and was originally a trail used by the native population and used as a wagon road...the section known as Fish Creek Hill has been closed for three years because of rock slides brought on by brush fires and erosion...at best it is a primitive road that should be used by vehicles with 4 wheel drive and high clearance...Canyon Lake is a popular destination for recreational boaters during warm months.
